New General Manager... Continuing sector pressures from PPT and future plans for BPIF Labels. |
Welcome Simon Mitchell, BPIF Labels General Manager
"On behalf of the special interest group BPIF Labels I would like to introduce myself as General Manager.
It is with great pride that I look forward to working with the BPIF and all of the BPIF Labels members. The aim is to continue to develop the group and not only have a seamless transition of this position but meet the necessary increasing demands of the industry and our members.
For background, I have been involved closely with the labels and narrow web market having spent almost 2 decades working at IST (UK) where I was Managing Director. The position lent itself to this market sector, in terms of sales, to the labels market, which fortunately for me at that time, being mostly UV print has enabled a great network of label printers, OEM’s to the label market along with partners suppliers (consumables, ancillaries etc.).
One thing that I have noticed immediately is the vast amount of data and information that BPIF Labels offer, this being available to members through our website. I would urge you to spend a few minutes in this area as the content covers a wide range of topics, support, advice, general support etc. A good example here is the way in which BPIF Labels were able to provide up front information on the recently introduced PPT (Plastic Packaging Tax) which is an unavoidable cost and administrative introduction for most label printers converters. The detail here is concise and individual cases have been advised on helping companies to fully understand the impact of this and the legal implications also."

Future plans...
"So this is my first addition to the BPIF Labels newsletter and I plan to continue to contribute to subsequent newsletters informing you of things happening currently, special events etc. Of course, it goes without saying that in between newsletters any topical matters arising shall be communicated directly to members by way of informing.
Moving forward, we would like to further enhance the BPIF Labels member services and plan to raise the profile of these through several channels. New members are also a key feature looking ahead and through the above we would like to achieve additional members, both converters and suppliers. Through events and direct marketing we will inform on areas of interest, introduce benefits of being a member and ensure that existing members are fully aware of the access they have to BPIF Labels services. Another area that we would like to introduce is working with members to raise their profile. Essentially, a spotlight feature introducing a members business overview, product exposure and personnel showcasing products and services. Events have been affected over the last couple of years due to the pandemic but now we are pleased to be holding 2 BPIF Labels Golf Days in 2022, and with a fully subscribed event being held in May, we encourage you to book early for the Autumn event being held at Carden Park in Cheshire on 22 September 2022. Please click here for further information and to book. Other events are now a possibility and in previous years we have held remote events with specific topics, technology-based, to explore different working practices etc. This is something that we would like to develop and shall be looking into this with a view to holding activities at locations nationally." |

Plastic Packaging Tax (PPT) Remember you must maintain records... If you haven't reached the 10 tonnes threshold yet, remember to retain records and when that threshold is reached you have 30 days to register for PPT. Go to the HMRC website for details on ‘How to Register’: www.gov.uk/guidance/register-for-plastic-packaging-tax If you manufacture in the UK and/or import any plastic packaging components within scope into the UK, you’ll need ensure you are retaining detailed records from 1 April 2022. These records will be used to calculate when/if you reach the 10-tonne threshold and will be needed as evidence for any HMRC queries. If you have already reached the 10-tonne threshold, your records will be used when submitting a return to HMRC. Returns must cover an accounting period, the first accounting period is 1 April to 30 June. Go to the HMRC website for details on ‘Returns’: www.gov.uk/guidance/completing-your-plastic-packaging-tax-return Before the end of the first accounting period the BPIF will be organising a roundtable for members to discuss their PPT experience, with the aim to provide government bodies with insight from members in the print sector.

“The BPIF have been great with special interest groups – BPIF Cartons and Labels working side by side to help their members tackle Plastic Packaging Tax. For those members that have limited resources and are still trying to deal with BREXIT, Covid and now PPT, it has been extremely helpful for the BPIF to be liaising with HMRC and trying to clarify one of the most widely defined taxes ever.
Step by step they have brought the industry together to make it workable and as simple as possible. Thank you and the team for all the effort and perseverance, it is much appreciated.”

Supply Shortages
Everyone is fully aware of the supply issues the industry has faced this year, and whilst an agreement was achieved in the manufacturing plants, the ramifications of shortages will continue to cause concern to the label market, in particular food, pharma, packaging. It will take some considerable time for the backlog and the logistics of supply to recalibrate itself and BPIF Labels will continue to track this reporting along the way of any progress, further delays and other relevant information. |
